Don't let frozen pipes freeze your home!

The arrival of winter means you should be ready for frozen pipes to occur in Hamilton.

Keep in mind that all of your pipes in your home will freeze just because one has frozen.

You may have a frozen pipe if you turn on a tap and the water only trickles out. Don’t worry it happens with the cold winter temperatures that happen in Hamilton. Here are some easy tips you can do yourself to get your water running as usual. If you are thawing the pipes yourself, remember to keep the faucet open a little because any water running through the pipe will help melt the ice in the pipe.

Now you can start to warm up exposed pipes by:

1.      Wrapping an electric heating pad around the pipe.

2.      Use a hair dryer on a warm setting. If the pipe is close to a wall and you can’t get around the whole thing, just place a cookie sheet in behind the pipe to help radiate the heat.

3.      Try a portable heater with heat facing the frozen section of the pipe. Don’t walk away for safety reasons.

4.      Wrap the pipe electric heat tape that contains heating elements. When the pipe has thawed, you can leave the heat tape on the pipe and plug it in when needed or on a really cold day. Do not use kerosene, a blow torch or propane to thaw out a pipe!

A frozen pipe that is located in a wall or ceiling is a little more challenging.

1.      Turn up your home’s heat.

2.      If you think the frozen pipe is in a wall that is in a kitchen cupboard or bathroom vanity, open the cupboard doors.

3.      Turn off the water until help arrives. You don’t want the pipe to burst.
